Fine-Scale Spatio-Temporal Data Generation in the Indian Himalayan Region (Overview)
Understanding environmental change in the Himalaya requires high-resolution data across space and time. Under the DST–NMSHE programme, we are developing a network of terrestrial and aquatic environmental data loggers across Himalayan river basins to generate fine-scale microclimatic and stream temperature datasets.
These measurements provide critical information to understand local environmental variability and long-term ecological responses to climate change across the Indian Himalayan Region.
The monitoring network currently spans the Beas, Bhagirathi, Teesta, and West Kameng basins, covering diverse elevations, vegetation types, and hydrological settings.
Terrestrial Microclimate Monitoring
Deployment Strategy
A network of terrestrial microclimate data loggers has been deployed to capture temperature variability across landscapes and elevation gradients.
The deployment follows a grid-based sampling framework where at least one data logger is installed within each 16 × 16 grid cell.
Sensors are strategically located near:
- Distinct vegetation types
- Multiple elevation bands
Current Network
- 110 HOBO U23 Pro V2 data loggers deployed
- Measurement accuracy: Temperature ±0.2°C, Relative Humidity ±0.2%
- Elevation coverage: 500 m – 5000 m
Monitoring Basins
- Beas Basin (2016–2019)
- Bhagirathi Basin (2015–2019, 2025–2026)
- Teesta Basin (2016–2018)
- West Kameng Basin (2024 onwards)
Aquatic Temperature Monitoring
Aquatic temperature loggers are deployed to generate fine-scale stream thermal profiles across Himalayan rivers. These sensors record high-frequency water temperature data to understand seasonal variation and thermal regimes of mountain streams.
Monitoring Basins
- Bhagirathi Basin – aquatic loggers deployed from 2025 onwards
- West Kameng Basin – aquatic loggers deployed from 2024 onwards
Due to logistical challenges in remote field deployments, some stations may experience interruptions caused by floods, sediment movement, or equipment malfunction.

This interface allows users to visualize the spatial coverage of the environmental monitoring network across the Himalaya.

Future Expansion
The monitoring network will continue to expand across additional Himalayan basins. Long-term environmental datasets generated through this initiative will support research on climate variability, ecological responses, and evidence-based environmental policy for the Indian Himalayan Region.
